Syphilis Rates in Nebraska Reach New High

September 29, 2024

Syphilis is on the rise, with record rates in our area. Read on to find out how it spreads, who’s at risk and the most common symptoms.

Increasing rates in Nebraska

Syphilis rates increased by 364% in Nebraska in just four years, from 70 cases in 2017 to 255 cases in 2021. These are the state’s highest rates of syphilis — ever. More recent data is still being compiled, but the trends are suggesting even more cases in 2022 and beyond.

How does syphilis spread?

Syphilis is a sexually transmitted infection (STI). You can get it by direct contact with a sore during vaginal, anal, or oral sex.

Using condoms correctly during sex lowers the risk of STIs. You can get free condoms at Family Health Services anytime, in several different sizes (both latex and non-latex). Check out our locations or call us to make an appointment.

Who is at risk?

Anyone who is sexually active can get syphilis. Groups at increased risk include:

  • People who have multiple sex partners
  • Men who have sex with men
  • Racial and ethnic minorities, especially Black people and Native Americans
  • Low-income groups

Nebraska men had five times the number of syphilis cases than Nebraska women in 2020. But women should also be concerned, since cases in Nebraska women increased by 1,163% since 2017.

Symptoms to look for

These are the most common symptoms:

  • Sores in, on, or around the penis, vagina, anus, rectum, lips, or mouth
  • Skin rashes on the palms of your hands or the bottoms of your feet

Other symptoms include:

  • Fever
  • Swollen lymph glands
  • Sore throat
  • Patchy hair loss
  • Headaches
  • Weight loss
  • Muscle aches
  • Fatigue (feeling very tired)

If you notice any of these symptoms, get tested. We offer free or low-cost STD testing and treatment! Sexually active individuals should get screened at least once a year. State law requires pregnant people to get tested, because syphilis can be transmitted to the developing fetus.

Is syphilis curable?

With the right treatment, syphilis is curable. However, it needs to be treated quickly. If left untreated, the infection can cause:

  • Blindness
  • Paralysis
  • Dementia
  • Systemic organ damage and failure
  • Death

It’s important to get treatment before the infection causes permanent damage. If you are sexually active, get tested at least once a year. With testing and treatment, we can keep syphilis under control.
