IUDs are a highly effective form of birth control, but the process of getting one can seem scary. Find out the latest on this topic, along with how we’ve been advocating for pain-free IUD insertion for years.
First, what’s an IUD?
An IUD (intrauterine device) is a type of birth control. It’s one of the most effective birth control methods. IUDs give you the power to protect yourself without the daily hassle of taking a birth control pill.
From TikTok to the CDC
Several women on TikTok have been sharing their experiences with IUD insertion and removal, highlighting how painful the process can be. Some were given no pain relief or told it’ll be “just a pinch.” These experiences trivialize what women have said for years: insertion can be really, really painful.
And researchers took note. A recent study analyzed the top 100 TikTok videos tagged #IUD. The results: 37.8% of the videos had a negative tone, compared to 19.4% positive.
The CDC reacted by releasing updated recommendations for IUDs. The update says health care providers should discuss with patients the potential pain of IUD insertion and options for pain management.
Our take on IUD insertion
We’ve known for years that IUD insertion can be painful. That’s why Family Health Services provides a local pain reliever called lidocaine for every IUD insertion. Lidocaine numbs the cervix, which is where the IUD is inserted. We’re also exploring other anesthetic (pain-reducing) options, too.
Every patient’s experience matters to us. Our goal is to always make you feel comfortable and informed about your options. If you want to get an IUD, but you’re concerned about the process or have other questions, talk to us.
